I merged several pictures of David till I got the right composition. I wanted the point of view to be his chin. Michelangelo’s ability to show perfect and strong features gets noticed in detail when you paint this amazing work. I enjoyed the part of getting the marble effect. The look is peaceful and confident. Look closely at his heart shaped eyes.
It was created in marble between 1501 and 1504 and is 5.17-metre (17.0 ft) tall.
He was 26 when he carved David and was the third sculptor to be commissioned. The first artist to attempt the project was Agostino di Duccio, who started to shape the feet and legs in 1463 but never got any further. Ten years later Antonio Rossellino took over where Agostino had left off but his involvement was short-lived too. Another 25 years would pass before Michelangelo was commissioned, starting from scratch and completing the statue in spectacular fashion.
It is carved from a single block of discarded Carrara marble and he describes his approach so eloquently “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”
